The UTS School of Design, led by Professor Lawrence Wallen, forms a dynamic community of students, academics, researchers and practitioners, incorporating six disciplines: Animation (Director: Assoc. Prof. Damien Gascoigne), Fashion and Textiles (Director: Todd Robinson), Integrated Product Design (Director: Berto Pandolfo), Interior and Spatial Design (Director: Professor Thea Brejzek), Photography (Director: Dr. Natasha Hughes), Visual Communication (Director: Dr. Jacqueline Gothe).
The School fosters creative and experimental modes of making and a rigorous discourse based on the contextualization and reflection on the role design plays in our social, political, and cultural realities. Many of our staff are recognised design leaders with strong networks and partnerships around the world.
Text and practice-based research are central to the school with academics engaged in research across the disciplines producing a large number of papers, articles, book chapters, books, exhibitions and patents in fields as diverse as data sense making, urban narratives, indigenous culture, performative space, smart materials, robotic design, advanced patternmaking, interactivation, to name a few.
