As a residential art center Künstlerhäuser Worpswede offers professional artists and scholars of respective disciplines a place to develop their work, to learn, to meet and cooperate with other fellows in an international context. Existing since 1971, it was the first residential center for artists in Germany. About 400 artists and fellows from about 35 countries have been guests, creating an intercultural, inter-disciplinary meeting point and working in different fields and media. The Kolonie is an undertaking by the Künstlerhäuser Worpswede that takes the form of a ‘land grab’ at the edge of the Teufelsmoor (Devil’s Moor). It brings together artists, researchers, craftspeople and activists from various disciplines. The Kolonie cooperates with international academies and art institutions as well as on a local basis. By re-appropriating the notion of the term ‘colony’ it is trying to reterritorialize its own location. It intends to continue the history of Worpswede as a fractal: The Kolonie is a speculation with respect to a location that will eventually consist of numerous smaller copies of itself. In this way, it aims to use the entrance to modernity in an archaeology of the location in order to help to find a way out of post-modernity.
