Located in Dublin’s City Centre on Parnell Square, the Hugh Lane Gallery (originally known as the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art), houses one of Ireland’s most exciting collections of modern and contemporary Irish and international art.

Founded in 1908 by Sir Hugh Lane as part of Ireland’s Celtic Revival Movement, the gallery is a public institution proudly part of Dublin City Council.

Visitors can explore an impressive array of works free of charge, including pieces by Impressionists Manet, Monet, Degas, Pissarro, and Morisot, as well as contemporary artists such as Agnes Martin, Nikki de Saint Phalle, Joseph Beuys, and Günther Uecker.

The international contemporary collection is diverse and extensive and includes the Sean Scully gallery, one of the most beautiful rooms dedicated to the work of a contemporary artist in Europe.

Francis Bacon’s studio was meticulously relocated from 7 Recce Mews, London in 1998. Preserved exactly as it was, the studio offers an immersive experience with unfinished works by the artist, personal items, and audio-visual displays that provide insight into the life of one of the 20th century’s most important figurative artists.

Located in the historic Charlemont House, designed by Sir William Chambers in 1763, the gallery retains many of its original architectural features, complementing the works on display.

The gallery’s exhibitions comprise commissions, site specific work, loans and projects by leading Irish and global artists. The dialogue between artists, curators and audiences contributes significant value to the Gallery and its role in civic society.

By encouraging innovative approaches to exhibition making, through its research, thematic concept and critical discourse, the Gallery enhances participation, awareness and enjoyment for all our audiences. It aims to be inclusive and diverse creating dialogues between the local and the global.

Hugh Lane Gallery offers dynamic Education and Community Outreach programs that foster creativity and art appreciation for all ages. Led by artists, art facilitators, and experts, these initiatives engage diverse communities with the gallery’s collections and exhibitions through interactive talks, discussions, tours and hands-on art courses.

The gallery also offers a bookshop, café, full wheelchair access, and designated disability parking. See hughlane.ie for details.
