An evening in celebration and support of Anthology’s expansion project
March 2, 2017, 6:30pm
Anthology Film Archives, the pioneer institution of preservation, study and exhibition of avant-garde film and video, will present a groundbreaking gala and auction on March 2, 2017 at Capitale, NY, in celebration and support of a new addition to the building, The Heaven and Earth Library & Cafe. The Library & Cafe will give Anthology’s audience, neighbors, and scholars access to rarely seen books, documents, and art of iconic film-makers such as Maya Deren, Kenneth Anger, Joseph Cornell, Harry Smith, Stan Brakhage and many others. Plans for a new Cafe, accessible to the community, will moreover provide a welcome addition to Anthology’s financial sustainability.
Founded in 1970 in the East Village by Jonas Mekas and Jerome Hill, for nearly 50 years Anthology Film Archives has served the independent film community and the neighborhood with daily screenings of international film and video. It has become an open space for research, community, and passion for the art of film.
Artists and enthusiasts from the New York art and film worlds will gather on March 2nd in support of the institution’s operations and mission and see that the Library and Cafe projects succeed and that the work of protecting the heritage of cinema, created outside of the commercial mainstream, continues.
A special music performance by Patti Smith will take place.
Legendary auctioneer Simon de Pury will lead a live auction highlighting donated works from over 100 international artists including: Matthew Barney, Joe Bradley, Phong Bui, Chuck Close, Robert Frank, Jenny Holzer, Alex Katz, Elizabeth Peyton, Richard Prince, Ed Ruscha, Richard Serra, Cindy Sherman, Sarah Sze, Christopher Wool, and many more.
