First programme of a new ongoing screening series from M+, Hong Kong
January 15–17, 2016
M+, Hong Kong’s new museum for visual culture, unveils a new ongoing series M+ Screenings that showcases diverse moving image works in the context of a single cinema screen. Taking place three times a year, each programme is conceived to explore a specific theme over a single weekend.
The first programme, M+ Screenings: Visible Places, presents works by 13 international and Hong Kong artists and filmmakers. It takes Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities as a point of departure to imagine how we see the places we have inhabited and experienced, and to consider a potential visual narrative that reflects on the pasts, presents and possible futures of place by making fictions, fantasies, alternatives and the surreal visible.
M+ Screenings: Visible Places will take place at Hong Kong’s Broadway Cinematheque from January 15–17, 2016. These animations, artist moving images, documentaries, feature films, and shorts examine how experiences, memories and desires of our lived environments are (re)invented and (re)imagined on-screen. After four years of successful exhibitions under the series title Mobile M+, the launch of M+ Screenings marks another significant chapter in the evolution of M+, building upon 2015’s acclaimed Mobile M+: Moving Images exhibition and screening programme, which was recently awarded the Best Exhibition of the Year (Contemporary Chinese Art) at the 2015 TANC Prize by The Art Newspaper China.
