April 15–July 16, 2017
A4 Contemporary Arts Center is a professional art space founded by Chengdu Wide Horizon Investment Group Co., Ltd. in March 2008. During the eight-years of exhibition projects focusing on young contemporary artists in Sichuan and across China, A4 Contemporary Arts Center has served as the frontier of contemporary art in Sichuan province. It was relocated to the Expo center in Chengdu’s Luxelakes Eco-city in Tianfu New Area in 2016 and was then formerly registered as a privately operated non-profit art museum in July entitled LUXELAKES·A4 Art Museum.
Along with its mission of expanding the scope of international arts and cultural exchange and attending to local artistic practices, LUXELAKES·A4 Art Museum devotes itself to strengthening its interaction and collaboration with communities and cities through a diverse range of public education projects and cultural events. The museum has invited famous young curators in China to plan and curate high-quality contemporary art exhibitions, including Theme Exhibitions on International Contemporary Art, Artist Case Studies, Artist in Residency International Exchange Programme, and Young Artist Experimental Season. These projects are accompanied by academic research to promote exchange and dialogue between art and other disciplines through public education projects in the form of lectures, cultural salons, experimental performances and education workshops.
As the only contemporary art institution with international connections in Chengdu, LUXELAKES·A4 Art Museum has launched a number of exhibition projects since August 2016, including Art Intervention and Social Practices Forum, and the 3rd iSTART City Fantasy Education Forum. Drawing on the vision of “bringing together pioneering art from home and abroad,” the museum invited the internationally renowned curator, LI Zhenhua, to curate the grand opening exhibition Create Spaces in April 2017. The exhibition is rooted in the museum’s imagination of creating a cultural space which not only encourages discussions about possibilities of creativity within its geographic scope, but also produces a creative space beyond mainstream urban culture.
The director of the museum, Sun Li, believes that, “Li Zhenhua, a curator who has received domestic and international attention in recent years, manifests special acuteness and creativity in terms of discovering and advancing New Media Art. He has also made many attempts in breaking the boundaries of curation. To us, the transition from an art center to a museum not only means an upgrade of the space, but also demands efforts in carrying out further research on new art forms and broadening the social role of the museum. We hope that the opening exhibition will bring about discussions and changes in these aspects through collaboration between curators and artists.” More details about the exhibition will be issued in March 2017.
