Frans Hals Museum | De Hallen Haarlem announces its 2016 exhibition programme in which transhistorical connections make a regular appearance. The programme encompasses a retrospective exhibition by Philipe Van Snick, solo exhibitions by Meiro Koizumi and Cécile B. Evans and site-specific projects by Than Hussein Clark and Saskia Noor van Imhoff in relation to the collection of 16th- and 17th-century painting. Guest curator Melanie Bühler commissioned four contemporary artists to respond to a wide variety of objects in the museum collection and the exhibition Wanderlust explores how modern Dutch artists have been inspired by Fernweh, trips and armchair travelling.
Philippe Van Snick
Solo exhibition i.c.w. Kunstverein Graz
De Hallen Haarlem, January 16–May 16, 2016
The work of Belgian artist Philippe Van Snick follows a conceptual logic, which is strict and systematic. He is known as a painter in a (post-) minimalistic tradition, but simultaneously produces highly tactile and poetic art. The central subject of this exhibition will be Van Snick’s painting in relation to space.
Inflected Objects # 2 Circulation - Mise en Séance
Group show by guest curator Melanie Bühler
De Hallen Haarlem, January 16–May 16, 2016
De Hallen Haarlem has in the past few years focussed on the relation between art and “the digital.” In this exhibition this field will be explored further by combining work from the modern and old art collections with that of four contemporary artists (Martijn Hendriks, Katja Novitskova, Vanessa Safavi and Dan Walwin). Central in this will be the influence of circulation and distribution on the assignment of value to objects.
Flowers from afar
Frans Hals Museum, March 24–May 16, 2016
Springtime is traditionally a time when the Frans Hals Museum is under the spell of flowers, with beautiful bouquets in extraordinary vases, amongst which a new set designed by students of the Rietveld Academy. A collection presentation that explores how painters of the Dutch Golden Age journeyed far beyond the borders to capture exotic flowers.
New & Old: Than Hussein Clark
Frans Hals Museum, March 19–June 12, 2016
Artist Than Hussein Clark holds a fascination for forgotten or hidden life stories of writers, artists and thinkers that can be perceived as gay icons, from Marcel Proust and Jean Cocteau to Bruce Chatwin. In his installations, Clark freely mixes sculpture with functional interior elements. In the Frans Hals Museum, he will realize a new series of sculptures and performances responding to the setting of the museum.
Wanderlust
Amongst Dutch artists since 1850
De Hallen Haarlem, May 28–September 11, 2016
In this exhibition the visitor travels to France with Jan Sluijters and to Spain with Leo Gestel, but also to Indonesia with Isaac Israels, to America with Adrian Lubbers and to the North Pole with Louis Apol. Scores of travel-fevered artists vie for attention in this summer show, with attention to painting, travel sketches, sculptural work, but also photography, installation and video.
New & Old: Saskia Noor van Imhoff
Frans Hals Museum, August 27–December 11, 2016
Collections and archives fascinate Saskia Noor van Imhoff. How are they amassed, how do the elements of the collection relate to one another, in what way are they ordered? In a poetic and mysterious way she established new relations between things and ideas. In the Frans Hals Museum Van Imhoff will realise a new installation traversing the permanent collection display as an alternative viewing machine.
Cécile B. Evans
Solo exhibition
De Hallen Haarlem, September 24, 2016–January 8, 2017
An exhibition with new and existing work by Belgian-American artist Cécile B. Evans. In her work, she draws new connections between the human and the digital/virtual. In her latest video installation What the Heart Wants, Evans presents a vision of the future about an omnipotent system with human traits, in which the impact of technology on society and our emotions is the central issue.
Meiro Koizumi
Solo exhibition
De Hallen Haarlem, September 24, 2016–January 8, 2017
The Japanese artist Meiro Koizumi creates captivating videos and installations about the boundaries of sacrifice and restraint within asymmetrical power relations, such as those between national sovereignty and the subjugated individual. Modern Japanese history, and the personage of the cynical outside play a recurring role in his work.
