Following Stefan Kalmár’s appointment as Director of the ICA London, the Artists Space Board seeks to appoint its next Executive Director, joining the organization at this exciting time in its 44-year history.
The past seven years represented an inspiring run, in which Artists Space held a leading role as an artist centered and agenda-setting organization. The program at Artists Space Exhibitions and the discursive approach of Artists Space Books & Talks made Artists Space one of the most innovative contemporary art organizations in New York, the United States and indeed the world.
Artists Space seeks to appoint a visionary thinker and progressive leader who will dynamically build on the organization’s past, creating an outstanding program, maintaining a stable organization and leading Artists Space’s move into its new TriBeCa location.
The Executive Director acts as the organization’s primary advocate and ambassador, initiates and develops key relationships that will support Artists Space’s mission and objectives.
In collaboration with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for short- and long-range strategic planning, organizational management, and management of its public profile; primary responsibilities include curatorial leadership, fundraising and all aspects of fiscal and day to day organizational management, and the service as board liaison.
The next Executive Director of Artists Space will inherit an organization in solid financial shape, and central to this position will also be the continual development of new income streams; the candidate must be willing to oversee an ambitious fundraising campaign towards Artists Space’s new venue, and equally will have the opportunity to fully impact on the future architecture and vision of the organization.
Core responsibilities
–Liaise with Board Committees and appropriate staff in the development and evaluation of plans that build upon Artists Space’s unique local, national and international reputation and positioning.
–Initiate and maintain new streams of government, foundation, corporate and self-generated income. Act as the organization’s key advocate to develop and manage a wide set of cultural, political, foundation, business, and media relationships. Initiate meetings with individual donors, increase private donations, nurture and develop the Board of Directors.
–Actively oversee the relocation into a new permanent home for Artists Space, working closely with the Board’s Real Estate Committee. Oversee key elements of this project, including budgets, construction timeline, and transition plans.
–Develop and monitor the annual budget together with Treasurer and senior financial staff. Manage all matters of finance and administration.
–Provide executive leadership for all of Artists Space’s resources and promote a positive, aspirational culture through a flexible, adaptive, and supportive approach—championing the core values of Artists Space.
–Build upon Artists Space’s position as a venue for diverse range of artists, writers, activists, curators and thinkers as well as independent groups and collectives. Artists Space Books & Talks is central to the conversations about the state of contemporary art and culture in New York, the new Executive Director should be able to build upon this defining and agenda-setting program.
Qualifications
Candidate must have minimum a BA or equivalent and at least five years management experience at a cultural organization of similar size. They must also have their own unique and visionary curatorial voice with outstanding relationship-building and communication skills.
