Peter Wächtler: Far Out

Chisenhale Gallery presents the first solo exhibition in a UK institution by Berlin and Brussels-based artist Peter Wächtler.

Wächtler works across a range of media including sculpture, drawing and animated film, with his writing and prose poems often providing source material. For Wächtler, the introverted experience of labour becomes both his process and his subject.

For his exhibition at Chisenhale Gallery, Wächtler presents a film made through traditional cel animation, soundtracked by a rock and roll song. The animation depicts the central subject’s departure along a country road, set against a backdrop of moonlit landscapes. The protagonist’s repetitive stasis invokes an ambiguous relationship with acts of progress or withdrawal, as well as our own misplaced desires.

Peter Wächtler (born 1979, Hannover) lives and works in Brussels and Berlin. Recent solo exhibitions include 9, KIOSK, Ghent (2016); Secrets of a Trumpet, The Renaissance Society, Chicago (2016); Westfälischer Kunstverein, Münster (2014); Reena Spaulings, New York (2014); dépendance gallery, Brussels (2013); Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna (2013). Selected group exhibitions include Surround Audience, New Museum Triennial, New York (2015); A Needle Walks into a Haystack, Liverpool Biennial, Liverpool (2014); Meanwhile… Suddenly and Then, Lyon Biennale (2013); Pride Goes Before a Fall / Beware of a Holy Whore, Artists Space, New York (2013). Sternberg Press published a collection of Wächtler’s texts in 2013, entitled Come On.

Screening of Peter Wächtler’s Tim and Racky (2011)

Peter Wächtler’s film Tim and Racky (2011) is screened in conjunction with First Thursdays, when the gallery remains open until 9pm on the first Thursday of each month. Emma Moore, Offsite and Education Curator at Chisenhale Gallery, provides an introduction to the film.

Paul Teasdale leads a tour of Peter Wächtler’s exhibition, placing Wächtler’s new work in relation to his previous animation, sculpture and text pieces. Paul Teasdale is a London-based writer and editor of frieze.com.
