SOMA Summer 2025: “BROTES (OUTBREAKS): Proposals to Delay the End of the World”
SOMA Summer is an intensive four-week program held in Mexico City, designed for international artists, curators, art historians, and critics interested in collaborative creation and critical reflection. The program fosters discussion and the exchange of diverse perspectives, encouraging critical and porous reflection far from essentialisms and binary thought.
Each SOMA Summer is organized around a different theme that provides a compelling conceptual framework for research and creative work. The 2025 edition, titled “BROTES (OUTBREAKS): Proposals to Delay the End of the World,” will explore themes of resistance, transformation, and alternative futures.
The program will be led by Vivian Abenshushan (interdisciplinary writer, Mexico City), Sara Eliassen (artist, Oslo) Taniel Morales (artist, Mexico City), and Yoshua Okón (artist, Mexico City) and is inspired by the ethical and political orientation of Brazilian indigenous thinker Ailton Krenak. Along with the main tutors, the program will feature guest tutors and collaborators. Participants will engage with various texts, including the speculative essay “Collective Aesthetics of the Land” by the Mixe Communal Network, and essays by Mexican philosopher Sayak Valencia, to examine the regime of live streaming and “gore capitalism.” The curriculum also includes discussions on collective forms of organization and non-instrumental relations with the land, drawing from the works of authors such as Paulo Tavares and David Graeber.
Throughout the four weeks, participants will engage in participatory pedagogies, forest walks, visits to cooperative projects in Mexico City, workshops, seminars, master classes, and portfolio reviews. These activities aim to create an intense encounter where participants can formulate questions about the territories they inhabit and the urgencies that bring them together, organizing amidst media, geopolitical, and existential challenges.
