Multidisciplinary and generative project dedicated to just transition
February 28–March 1, 2025
The second phase of Reciprocity project will be held from February 28–March 1, 2025 at La Casa Invisible, in Malaga.
A symposium, participatory work, workshop on the “Just Transition”. Reciprocity is a project in two chapters held from September 2024 and April 2025, born from the analysis of Turin and Malaga as case studies of two different urban contexts that are both experiencing gentrification. Turin is a city with an industrial past, recently converted in a cultural hub, it is enriched by an interesting natural heritage, although there are ongoing proposals for exploiting green areas and parks for private economic interests; Malaga has an urban centre overwhelmed by the process of gentrification and touristification, where phenomena of activism and resistance of the citizens have developed. That is in the case of the socio-cultural center La Casa Invisible, in which Civic Engagement, Architecture, Art and Culture have become tools for an alternative future.
Reciprocity is conceived by visual artist Eva Frapiccini and promoted by Print Club Torino inviting as partners in this conversation: La Casa Invisible and the artists duo Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson, the research centre Full—Future Legacy Lab of the Politecnico di Torino, LabOnt—Laboratory of Ontology of the University of Turin, and the Asociación de Arte Útil, an international platform to promote art as a tool for social change.
Reciprocity adopts a multidisciplinary and generative approach to address different challenges of cohabitation in our societies: the relationship between public spaces and individuals in urban areas, sustainable tourism, gentrification and the growing housing crisis, the involvement of communities in cultural planning, the care of public green spaces, community practices and urban policies for the management of natural resources.
The symposium held on September 20 and 21, 2024 at Toolbox Coworking building, in Turin, involved architects, artists, urban planners, researchers, and administrators to debate issues related to resources and challenges of many European urban territories, meanwhile the team of Print Club Torino lead a laboratory of silk-screen printing to visualize sentences and words emerged from the panel discussion. The words printed and sewn onto the two large photographic works printed on fabric created by Frapiccini: they become a trace of the voices that come together at each stage of the project and collect thoughts and requests for the future of coexistence with the natural environment.
In another room of Toolbox Coworking, the visitors could see the video The Rehabilitation of La Casa Invisible—Chapter I realized by the artists Libia Castro and Ólafur Ólafsson in collaboration with La Casa Invisible.
The second chapter of the project will start and take place on February 28 and March 1, 2025 at La Casa Invisible and Imprenta Matriz in Malaga, with a printing workshop, exhibition and a public talk, discussing Reciprocity´s project and The Rehabilitation of La Casa Invisible—Chapter I, in relation to the analogies between both contexts, their struggle and the effects of touristification. The two photographic works by Frapiccini form a link between the two cities, and welcome participants’ thoughts for the future of both territories, with new texts created in the printing workshops.
