The CCA is looking for a Chief Communications Officer to position its mission and goals, its programs, research, and holdings, reinforcing the institution’s curatorial approach. As key member of the CCA’s leadership team, the candidate will be responsible for the overarching effective direction and leadership of the institution-wide marketing, communication and audience engagement strategies.
As an international research centre and museum that operates from the fundamental premise that architecture is a public concern, the CCA explores the role of architecture in larger questions affecting society today. Led by Director and Chief Curator Giovanna Borasi, and steered by the CCA Board of Trustees, the CCA advances knowledge, promotes public understanding, and widens thought and debate on architecture, its history, theory, practice, and its role in society through its collection, exhibitions, films, public programs, publications, and research opportunities. The CCA was founded by Phyllis Lambert in 1979 as a new type of cultural institution, with the specific aim of increasing public awareness of the role of architecture in contemporary society and promoting research in the field.
Summary of responsibilities
The Chief Communications Officer is responsible for developing and executing a cohesive, multi-channel communication strategy that enhances CCA’s visibility, engagement, and fundraising efforts. This includes overseeing brand voice and consistency, shaping major messaging initiatives, and crafting content tailored to our audiences, including diverse publics, donors, and government stakeholders.
Working closely with the Chief Advancement Officer, the role aligns marketing and communication strategies with fundraising initiatives and donor engagement. Managing CCA’s social media and web presence, the position ensures increased community engagement and accessibility. Additionally, the role identifies and fosters strategic partnerships to expand brand awareness, attendance, and institutional growth through collaborations, media sponsorships, and cross-promotional opportunities.
As a key spokesperson for CCA, the role cultivates media and community relationships, ensuring positive public perception and maintaining a strong institutional presence.
Internally, the role provides leadership and mentorship to the Communication team, fostering a collaborative workplace environment. It involves developing an internal communication strategy in collaboration with People and Culture, ensuring clear and effective messaging across leadership, emergency response, peer connections, and Board communications.
Budget and workforce planning are also central to the role, ensuring resources align with institutional priorities. Additionally, the position stays informed of emerging trends in the museum and non-profit sectors to maintain CCA’s leadership and relevance.
Required qualifications
The ideal candidate holds a university degree in communications, journalism, public relations, art or architecture history, or a related field, with at least 10 years of experience in communications, ideally in arts and culture. They have expertise in strategic planning, team leadership, media relations, crisis communication, and partnership building. Strong writing, marketing, and digital communication skills are essential, along with experience managing budgets and multiple projects. Fluency in English and French is required. Experience with social media, graphic design collaboration, and international roles is an asset. Excellent interpersonal skills and adaptability to evolving communication technologies are key.
Contract, 3 years, full-time (35 hours per week)
