Haute école des arts du Rhin (HEAR) offers an international graphic design master’s program in Strasbourg accepting applications for the 2025–26 academic year.

This innovative two-year program aims to gather a multicultural, multilingual, and diverse group of twelve students to explore and develop a critical discourse on and through all forms of written, computational, graphical and performed languages, within the expanded field of graphic design.

Through a speculative, conceptual, and critical practice of graphic design, students are encouraged to develop their personal work and collective projects using diverse media, printed and digital, with a particular focus on their interactions, including coding and generative design. Theoretical questions address the most contemporary issues in the fields of visual studies, arts and design, including their political and societal aspects, considering the evolving tools, media, and knowledge, along with their uses in the digital and networked era.

The syllabus consists of courses, seminars, group and individual meetings and is punctuated by guest artists’ and designers’ lectures, talks, exhibitions, workshops and other events organized by the department. Master’s students are directly involved in various real-life projects, including printed and digital publications, in collaboration with various institutional partners.

During the fourth–and last–semester, students must submit a written master’s thesis (in English or French) and a selection of works developed over two years in front of a jury comprised of four professional and academic personalities.

The school is located in the student district of Krutenau in the heart of Strasbourg, close to the university and within walking distance of the main train station. The graphic design studios have recently relocated to the newly renovated Manufacture des Tabacs, a historic industrial site and dynamic urban project, situated just across from the school’s historic building.

Master’s students have access to all school facilities, including  traditional and digital printing, silkscreen, binding, wood shop, animation, video, digital labs and a photography studio, among others. The Master’s Graphic [···] Languages is part of the Communication Design Department. HEAR offers many other programs in the fields of art, applied arts, communication and design fostering exchanges and collaborations across departments and students.

Within the Master, most group conversations and classes take place in English to ensure accessibility for a wide range of students. In addition to a good level of English, a basic knowledge of French might be useful, but is not required.

In addition, HEAR and the University of Strasbourg (Unistra) jointly offer a double Master’s degree in Graphic Design, partly in French. This collaboration is based on the complementary skills of the two institutions: Unistra trains researchers/designers through its Master’s programs Design Graphique et Cultures Visuelles and Environnements Numériques, the latter specializing in digital environments, while HEAR trains graphic designers with a critical practice through its Master’s degree Graphic [···] Languages. The application process is divided into two steps: please contact us for further information about this double Master’s degree.
