Bildmuseet seeks a curator of exhibitions, a permanent full-time position in Umeå, Sweden. The final application date is May 5, 2025. Employment begins October 10, 2025, or by agreement.
Bildmuseet is one of Sweden’s foremost venues for international contemporary art, a part of Umeå University and the public heart of its Arts campus – a campus which also includes Umeå Academy of Fine Arts, Umeå Institute of Design, Umeå School of Architecture and UmArts Research Centre. Bildmuseet is a place for stimulating encounters and conversations about art, society and existence. On seven floors of striking architecture, the fields of Art, Humanities and Science combine to consider key issues of our time.
Description and work duties
Bildmuseet is a creative workplace with around twenty employees. Together we run a public exhibition and events program focused on international contemporary art. We curate and produce exhibitions of the highest quality in collaboration with artists and art museums from around the world. Workplace language is Swedish and English.
As curator at Bildmuseet, you will initiate, curate, manage and implement exhibitions, public programs and projects in consultation with Bildmuseet’s director and artistic leader. The work includes project management, budget responsibility including seeking external funds, producing texts and publications. In addition to exhibition production, you will be responsible for initiating and implementing public talks and events including performing guided tours and lead public conversations as part of the events program. Research collaboration may apply within certain projects.
Qualification requirements
We are looking for candidates with a university degree in art history, curating or equivalent, who have experience in curating and project management of exhibitions from one or more contemporary art institutions. You have an international profile and a curatorial practice with international networks relevant for Bildmuseet’s programme. You are used to independently initiate, run and implement exhibition projects, and you have experience in managing budgets and attracting external funding.
You have excellent communication skills, you express yourself well in both speech and writing in the field of contemporary visual arts, and you have experience of communicating contemporary art to a wide range of audiences. As a curator, you will work towards deadlines, which requires resistance to stress and flexibility, and an ability to plan and organize your work successfully. You also have good collaboration skills.
A doctorate in art history, curatorial practice or equivalent will be a merit.

Employment begins October 10, 2025 or by agreement. A six-months probationary period may apply. The workplace is Umeå, Sweden. Workplace language is Swedish and English, and those who speak only English are offered to attend a Swedish course for coworkers at Umeå University.
