The exhibition IN.SIGHT honours one of the most extensive donations in the history of the Galerie der Gegenwart. Berlin-based collector and gallerist Alexander Schröder (b. 1968) has gifted the Hamburger Kunsthalle an impressive ensemble of over 70 works by contemporary artists, greatly enriching the museum’s collection and filling significant gaps.
The donation includes works by Anne Collier, Isa Genzken, Samson Kambalu, Martin Kippenberger, Manfred Pernice, Martha Rosler, and Andreas Slominski, complementing existing artistic positions within the collection and adding nearly 20 more artists who, for the first time, are now represented at the Kunsthalle, opening up new themes and narratives.
As suggested by the exhibition title IN.SIGHT, borrowed from a work by Philippe Thomas, the show offers insights, including into Schröder’s own identity as a collector. A central theme in his collection is a focus on international artistic positions from the 1970s to the present day that challenge societal norms and broaden the art-historical canon. Schröder highlights works addressing socio-political issues around belonging, gender, identity, migration, social spaces, nationalism, and racism, inviting these topics to be reconsidered.
