Two years full-time, Norwegian/English. Application deadline: February 3, 2025.

In the MFA programme in Medium- and Material-based Art, students have the opportunity to develop their practice and research within a range of material specialisations: ceramics, textile, print and drawing, metal and jewelry. The programme’s interdisciplinary structure promotes collaboration across the department and within the institution, with the aim of fostering experimentation and innovation in artmaking and scholarship. The programme faculty members’ wide range of competencies is further enriched by national and international collaborations and by local partnerships with the professional art institutions of Oslo. The study programme emphasizes artistic independence and encourages an experimental approach to artistic practices that respond to the urgencies of our time with hands-on skills rooted in material traditions. Theory is essential as the programme weaves theory and artistic practice.

The Oslo National Academy of the Arts has some of the most advanced workshop facilities in Europe. The Art and Craft department uses workshops as sites for teaching, artistic development and research as well as gallery space for student work.

In addition to its focus on exhibitions, the programme’s annual public lecture series devoted to art education, research, theory, and politics—the Art and Craft lectures—provide a window to the broader public. Previous guest lecturers have included Astrida Neimanis, Tai Shani, Denise Ferreira da Silva, T.J. Demos, Carolina Caycedo, Rick Dolphijn, Joar Nago and Ina Blom.

The department offers four areas of medium and material specialization–Metal Art and Jewelry, Ceramic Art, Printmaking and Drawing, and Textile Art–as well as an MFA in Art and Public Space.

The international learning environment at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts accommodates English-speaking students.
