The Royal Academy of Art The Hague (KABK) welcomes students from different backgrounds to apply for its master’s programmes. If you still have questions about one of our master’s programmes, you can attend an online Q&A session. Prospective students are also welcome to attend a tour, which offers the opportunity to explore the workshops and ask questions about the programmes.

Studying a MA at KABK
The KABK offers seven master’s programmes, all of which last two years, with the exception of Type and Media which is a one-year programme. Our tutors combine their teaching with their practice in the cultural sector. Teaching takes the form of small-scale lectures, with a combination of practical and theoretical artistic research. Read below what it means to study a master’s programme at KABK.

Jasper Coppes, tutor Master Artistic Research: “At this master we see artistic practice as a vital way of exploring our contemporary world. Students are supported to delve into what drives their artistic inquiry, by classes in critical theory and workshops that open up research methodologies from an artistic perspective. You’ll develop your artistic voice through mentorship from an experienced team of artists and curators, and through collective exhibitions.”  Join the online Q&Aonline portfolio advice sessions or tour at the academy.

Marja van der Burgh, coordinator Master Type and Media: “The Master Type and Media is about making letters and see how they form patterns. It is about learning to navigate between expectation and endless possibility, using pen, brush, computer and code. You will work together in a small international group of twelve students, guided by expert type-designers.” Join a portfolio talk.

Lotte van den Berg, coordinator Master Interior Architecture (INSIDE): “This programme is a collaborative learning community of teachers and students. Through our interdisciplinary approach, we try to stretch the boundaries of interior architecture, and work on social and cultural challenges. We aim for spatial impact, in which research and design are intertwined.” Join the tour at the academy.

Maya Rasker, acting head ArtScience Interfaculty: “The Interfaculty fosters artistic research practices that create new sensorial experiences and insights. It nurtures alliances across cultural, artistic, sensorial and scientific boundaries. Our projects engage the human senses often in the form of performances, soundscapes and audiovisual installations. ArtScience encourages bringing in technological and scientific input into the artistic practice.” Join the tour at the academy.

Shadman Shahid, head Master Photography & Society: “Studying at our department means exploring the potential of photography to address societal issues. You will be joining a vibrant, critical community where photography is more than an art form—it is a tool for change. Through mentorship, collaboration, and self-reflection, you will develop projects that challenge perspectives, provoke dialogue, and make an impact on society.”  Join the tour at the academy.

Zara Roelse, coordinator Master Industrial Design: “At this master, designers are educated to use design to address pressing issues of our time. The programme emphasizes individual growth through collaborative-learning, diversifying perspectives, and critical reflection. Design projects, theoretical research, collaborations and other peer-learning structures enable students to ask questions, seek answers, and design for transformation.” Join the online portfolio advice sessionsonline Q&Atour at the academy.

Niels Schrader, head Master Non Linear Narrative: “This is a programme that lies somewhere at the intersection of design, journalism and technology. It is led by an international team of designers, programmers, filmmakers and artists who, together with a small group of students, explore visual forms of non-linear storytelling. The programme takes the entanglement of relations in the global society as a starting point. This way, complex socio-political issues are identified and interrogated and communicated to a broad audience.” Join the online portfolio advice sessionstour at the academy.
