Isa Mona Lisa is the ironic and playful title chosen for a large-scale exhibition that provides a lively glimpse of recent art via a selection of special works by international contemporary artists. The title is taken from an eponymous photograph by Wolfgang Tillmans (b. 1968) of his artist colleague Isa Genzken (b. 1948), and both are represented with works in the exhibition. Visitors will encounter specially furnished artist rooms featuring new acquisitions by the Hamburger Kunsthalle, most of them presented for the first time, as well as iconic works from the collection and others that can now be put on display thanks to a recently launched collaboration with an important private collection in Hamburg.
The large-scale exhibition presents approximately 130 works spanning the 1970s to the present day, inviting visitors to embark on a vibrant journey through contemporary art. With a mix of celebrated and lesser-known artists, it offers an insightful exploration of recent artistic points of view. A key feature of the exhibition is the artist rooms, carefully curated spaces showcasing new acquisitions by the Hamburger Kunsthalle.
The exhibition addresses significant themes of our time and explores aspects of power and vulnerability, intimacy and openness as well as naturalness and artificiality. It also takes a look at constructions of reality and identity and shows them in their mutability.
