Ammodo Architecture shares first-ever recipients of the Ammodo Architecture Award, a new annual initiative supporting exemplary socially and ecologically responsible architecture and its makers from around the world. The 23 awardees are recognized across three categories: Social Architecture, Social Engagement, and Local Scale. They will receive from 10,000 to 150,000 EUR each to support and develop their practice and new projects.
The award reinforces architecture’s critical and transformational role in addressing societal and environmental challenges and gives visibility to both the global architecture community and local practitioners. Ammodo Architecture prioritizes how awardees establish new projects and initiatives to address contemporary challenges with new perspectives and knowledge in architecture. Along with the award, a developing knowledge platform strives to make projects visible and foster knowledge sharing—central to this will be a growing online archive.
The awardees were chosen by a global multidisciplinary advisory committee, chaired by Joumana El Zein Khoury, including: Andrés Jaque, Anupama Kundoo, Floris Alkemade, and Mariam Issoufou.
Advisory Committee Statement
There is a change of paradigm for architects as we look for a new role in society—we need to move closer to the realities that require transformation, within the context in which these projects begin. The Ammodo Architecture Award recognises the sheer complexity of the world, human and non-human communalities, and the role of architecture within it. The projects awarded clearly show social engagement and multidisciplinary efforts that have the larger community and natural systems in mind. Things that were once considered experimental are entering the mainstream—it’s the perfect time to identify projects that truly embody the search for a new future.
Marleen van Driel, Head of Architecture at Ammodo said:
“The awardees show us that architecture can offer us a new perspective and set new standards in social engagement and ecological responsiveness. Ammodo Architecture is here to capture and share this knowledge to support its visibility and impact. Our new awards hope to catalyse new projects and show architecture’s progress and contribution to contemporary social and ecological challenges.”
