Assistant Professor/Associate Professor of Visual Arts. Field of specialization: Painting and Drawing.

The Visual Arts Program in the School of the Arts at Columbia University invites applications for a position at the rank of Assistant Professor/Associate Professor of Visual Arts (tenure-track/tenured) specializing in painting and drawing, effective July 1, 2025. 

The program seeks an accomplished working artist with a primary focus on painting and drawing and an active exhibition record, as well as strong technical skills and a conceptual grounding in the medium and history of painting and drawing. A thorough knowledge of contemporary art discourse, the ability to address works across other art disciplines, and at least two years of teaching experience or the equivalent are strongly preferred.

Graduate and undergraduate students in the Visual Arts Program work in all forms including moving image, painting, performance, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and expanded practice. The Program, in association with the Department of Music and the Computer Music Center, also offers courses and an MFA in Sound Art.

The successful candidate will teach courses and advise students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, participate in critiques, oversee master’s theses, and mentor postgraduate planning. A fully engaged presence on campus is required as well as a willingness to collaboratively shape the future of the Visual Arts Program at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Participation in rotating service and leadership roles (Program Chair, Director of Graduate or Undergraduate Studies, Discipline Head, MFA admissions) and committee work at the School of the Arts and the University will be required.

Candidates for Assistant Professor/Associate Professor (tenure-track) must have demonstrated and show promise of the capacity for creative work and the accompanying pedagogy qualifying them for future nomination to tenure.

Candidates with the rank of Associate Professor (tenured position) must have a record of excellence in teaching and be widely recognized for their distinction and professional accomplishment and demonstrate promise of attaining further distinction.

Columbia University School of the Arts offers Masters of Fine Arts degrees in four disciplines: Film, Theatre, Visual Arts, and Writing, as well as a Masters of Arts and related undergraduate programs.

Salary range or pay grade
Assistant Professor (tenure-track): 90,000–115,000 USD
Associate Professor (tenure-track): 115,000–135,000 USD
Associate Professor (tenured): 135,000–175,000 USD

Qualifications
Minimum degree required: BA or equivalent. Preferred degree: Master of Fine Arts or equivalent. Preferred teaching experience: two years or the equivalent.
