Applications are now open for the MA Artists’ Film & Moving Image at Goldsmiths for September 2025 entry.

The MA Artists’ Film & Moving Image at Goldsmiths is a unique, twelve-month, intensively taught practice-based programme designed for artists and filmmakers working in the field of artists’ moving image. Situated in London with close ties to professional bodies and institutions, this programme offers an extraordinary opportunity to engage directly with some of the world’s leading research centres, exhibitions, and film festivals.

With access to Goldsmiths’ expert faculty and visiting lecturers, students are immersed in a supportive network of professionals and peers. The course fosters a strong sense of community within a small, tightly knit cohort, where each student receives individualised support and mentorship. The MA Artists’ Film & Moving Image has been recognised time and again for developing the distinctive voices of its students, encouraging unique approaches that have been powerfully showcased in their ambitious final degree exhibitions.

Each student’s experience is central to the programme, with a focus on nurturing artistic innovation and personal growth. You will be encouraged to experiment and bring your unique perspective to the expanding field of artists’ moving image. Our bespoke curriculum integrates practice, theory, and professional development, enabling students to reflect on the intellectual, aesthetic, social, and technical processes that bring their artistic projects from idea to realisation. The programme offers a combination of discursive and practical teaching, including lectures, seminars, and workshops that explore the histories, contexts, and futures of artists’ moving image.

The programme places a strong emphasis on professional development through bespoke mentoring, practical workshops, and study visits, where students can expand their professional connections, learning firsthand from experienced practitioners. Throughout the programme, students can suggest and work with a range of esteemed guest tutors, including, most recently, Alia Syed, Beny Wagner, Jamie Crewe, Jessica Sarah Rinland, Julia Parks, Murat Adash, Nina Davies, Onyeka Igwe, Riar Rizaldi, R.I.P. Germain, Saeed Taji Farouky, William Raban, and many more. These guests bring invaluable insight, practical experience, and a range of perspectives, enriching students’ learning experiences and broadening their understanding of contemporary artists’ film and moving image practice.

The Department of Art offers world-class art-production facilities, providing expert support across a wide variety of processes that complement and extend traditional disciplines, from graphics and video editing, animation and 3D modelling to photography, ceramics, woodwork, metalwork and casting, textiles and print. Additionally, students on the MA Artists’ Film & Moving Image programme have access to dedicated equipment, including digital and 16mm cameras, as well as dedicated studio space and opportunities to show work in external exhibitions and screening programmes.

Through this comprehensive approach, students gain a deep, well-rounded preparation for a dynamic and evolving field, equipped to contribute to and shape the future of artists’ film and moving image.

Our graduates go on to make significant contributions across the fields of art, film, and moving image, most recently including: Myrid Carten’s first feature premiering at IDFA 2024; Syd Farrington’s work featured at the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2024; Sarah Lewis winning both the Jannuzzi Smith Award and Le Film Français Award at the Locarno Film Festival 2023; Umi Ishihara exhibiting at the Fukuoka Art Museum and at MIMOCA, Japan, in 2024; Max Bloching presenting work at Visions du Réel 2024; Leonie Kellein releasing the publication A Wing Beat!
