Printed Matter: Words Ending on Tape
October 20–December 17, 2016
Julian Charrière: Siempre cuenta cuántos cuentos cuentas (Always count how many tales you tell)
Berlin-based artist Julian Charrière moonlights as a poet scientist in the pursuit of his work, which The Guardian calls, “bracing, beautiful, quick with ideas and driven by a highly adventurous curiosity.” Using specimens and photographic evidence collected on his adventures, the internationally-acclaimed artist encourages a confrontation between humanity and the elements, while lending a human element to both the sterility of the empirical world and the wilderness of the natural world. The show is curated by Sandino Scheidegger.
Library in Residence—Printed Matter Inc.: Words Ending on Tape
Despacio collaborates with Printed Matter Inc. (New York) to revive a disappearing medium. A few decades ago the most convenient way to record audio was on a cassette tape, a device now almost completely forgotten in the shadow of the rapidly advancing digital world. Nevertheless, artists have continuously used this format to further expand their forms of expression. Despacio’s Library in Residence program is an ever-evolving selection of artworks, artist books, and unique handmade publications that together not only reimagine ingrained library systems but also examine literature’s role in contemporary art.
About Despacio
The independent art space located in San José, Costa Rica was founded by the artist Federico Herrero with the simple premise that there is something positive to be gained by local and international artists speaking to one another. For more than a decade, Despacio has provided a fertile ground for developing new tendencies in the arts, while staying truly unbothered by rules and bureaucracy.
Despacio is advised by Jens Hoffmann (Deputy Director Jewish Museum, New York and MOCAD Senior Curator, Detroit), Pablo León de la Barra (Guggenheim UBS MAP Curator, New York), Sagrario Perez Soto (Collector, San José), and Judko Rosenstock (Collector, San José).
