The Hunter College MFA in Studio Art is an exceptional interdisciplinary program centered in the heart of downtown Manhattan offering students direct access to the cultural resources of New York City. Immersion in the arts and contact with working artists is a crucial aspect of our educational goal—the development of professional artists who are creatively and intellectually rigorous members of the arts community.

As part of a public university, the three-year program is affordably priced and designed to offer artists a broad range of opportunities, allowing them to develop their practice in an environment that encourages experimentation, professional development, and critical dialogue. MFA students have the opportunity to work closely with faculty and visitors—artist, curators, writers and historians—key figures currently active in the field of contemporary art. Students engage in individual tutorials, small seminars focused on group critique and contemporary practice, studio electives, and classes in the theory, criticism and the history of art. Students are provided with studio spaces and access to a wide range of facilities including a wood shop, metal shop, digital fabrication, ceramics, analog and digital photography labs, printmaking studio, sound and video editing rooms, AV checkout, lighting equipment, and more. The three year program concludes with a public exhibition at the 205 Hudson Gallery, and the option to pursue a curatorial certificate.
