Overview
NGV seeks a Senior Curator whose work exemplifies the NGV’s values, ambition and leadership. In this role, the Senior Curator will work closely with team members across the NGV to conceptualise, develop, and execute exhibitions, commissions, partnerships, publications, programs and importantly, contribute to the strategic development of the NGV’s leading Photography collection—the largest collection of its kind in Australia.
The Senior Curator will manage the Photography curatorial team and demonstrate leadership qualities that align with organisational goals, including bringing new ideas and approaches to departmental and cross-departmental planning.
Responsibilities
Curatorial and programming:
–Bring extensive knowledge of the field to take a strategic approach to collection development.
–Work with specialised teams to realise ambitious projects, including contributing to a rich program of exhibitions and collection displays ranging from historical to contemporary photography and expanded media.
–Play an active role in major programming such as NGV Triennial—the NGV’s flagship contemporary exhibition series, reaching over 1+million visitors, and contribute to planning for exhibition and collection programming at The Fox: NGV Contemporary, a landmark building and third site for NGV, opening in 2028 and dedicated to art and design of the 21st century.
–Draw upon strategic planning experience and contribute new ideas and approaches.
–Contribute to interpretation and scholarship that seeks to engage broad and diverse audiences.
Leadership and relationships:
–Bring demonstrated people management experience to the role to manage the Photography curatorial department and its projects.
–Ensure the safekeeping of the Photography collection according to NGV policies and procedures.
–Perform a senior and strategic role in building, developing and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders, and promote awareness and support of the NGV Photography collection through engagement with donors, partners and collaborators.
Requirements
–A relevant post-graduate tertiary qualification combined with demonstrated high level curatorial and/or institutional experience particularly within the area of Photography.
–Extensive experience in and specialist knowledge of art history, and/or contemporary art
–Demonstrated experience in managing a team, including actively seeking opportunities to improve others’ skills and talents by providing constructive feedback, coaching and training opportunities.
–Demonstrated knowledge of national and international art markets, and national and international collections.
–Eligibility to work and live in Australia (relocation assistance, if required, can be negotiated as part of remuneration package)
Salary
130,673–152,772 AUD per annum + 11.5% superannuation (VPS 6.1)
