From London to Toronto
September 17–25, 2024
Now in its sixth year, Allies and Morrison’s annual conference, Citymakers, brings together developers, planners, academics and designers to look beyond the boundaries between practitioners and the public; between a site and the city; exploring the often misunderstood role of masterplanning in the making of cities today. This year Citymakers returns with a pair of international events—in London and Toronto—to explore the role of transport in catalysing sustainable development in creating meaningful communities.
Compact development around transport nodes is part of our cities’ low carbon future, but how can we ensure access to mass transit anchors successful neighbourhoods with diverse communities? How can these sites of interchange become places of permanence, not just sites to pass through?
Toronto is one of the fastest growing cities in North America, with a pressing demand for housing without car-dependency. London, with an integrated transport network like few global cities have and Opportunity Areas often anchored by important transport connections, finds itself in a moment of change with a new government faced with the challenge to deliver thousands of new well-connected homes.
What can these two cities learn from each other to build sustainable, people-centred places for the future?
