A collective exhibition that calls on the African artistic diaspora, and solo shows by William Klein, Catarina Dias, Vivian Suter and Anthony McCall.
Black Ancient Futures brings together 11 artists from the vast African diaspora: Baloji, April Bey, Jeannette Ehlers, Lungiswa Gqunta, Evan Ifekoya, Kiluanji Kia Henda, Nolan Oswald Dennis, Gabriel Massan, Jota Mombaça, Sandra Mujinga, and Tabita Rezaire. Presented in the MAAT’s two buildings and garden, the selected works are the result of the combination of specific features of African culture with other cultures and geographical spaces, and reveal the original energy of the itinerant fate of the African condition—of exile and settlement in the context of slavery, or of voluntary or forced migration as a result of the current global economic, political, and climate crises—offering a universe of creative possibilities. A catalogue of the exhibition will be available in January 2025 by Hirmer Publishers.

All the World’s a Stage is the most ambitious and comprehensive exhibition of the work of William Klein since his death in 2022. Covering various aspects of his production through approximately 200 works—street photography, fashion, cinema, editorial production—and taking us to major cities such as New York, Paris, Rome, Moscow and Tokyo, the exhibition emphasises the sense of performance and theatricality of the American photographer, highlighting the unique way in which he interacted with his models and subjects. To accompany the exhibition, MAAT has published a lavishly illustrated book of 188 pages, which presents the public with entirely new texts.
Curated by David Campany. September 18, 2024–February 3, 2025.

Catarina Dias (London, 1978) has developed a body of work questioning the plastic and conceptual derivations of drawing and painting. Her exhibition INVERTED ON US offers an approach to experiencing a new construction of the visible that challenges what is immediately perceptible and typically recognisable to our eyes. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue published by MAAT.
Curated by Filipa Correia de Sousa. September 18, 2024–March 17, 2025.
Disco by Vivian Suter will present at MAAT’s Oval Gallery more than 500 paintings by the Swiss-Argentine artist who has explored the possibilities of painting, particularly in its relationship with nature. This exhibition will then travel to Paris, to be presented at Palais Tokyo in the summer of 2025. The partnership between the two institutions also extends to the publication of a monograph by JRP|Editions still this year.
