Ulises: Assembly
August 13–November 10, 2024
Reception: Thursday, September 5, 6–8pm
Tomashi Jackson: Across the Universe presents the evolution of the artist’s work over the past nine years in which she fuses deep historical research with artistic strategies of color and layering to illuminate patterns of activism, resistance, oppression, and societal advances.
Influenced by California muralist traditions, Jackson’s work scrutinizes the mechanics of societal power and recognizes triumphs in civil rights advocacy and the empowerment of communities of color. Featuring artworks inspired by communities and individuals in New York, Missouri, Georgia, Texas, Ohio, Colorado, and Athens, Greece, Across the Universe demonstrates Jackson’s ongoing commitment to investigating underrecognized histories and visualizing recurring patterns in American democracy. Throughout the run of the exhibition, TUAG will present a slate of related programming that further explores the season’s themes of democratic identity, color theory, protest, and community.
Across the Universe is organized by Miranda Lash, Ellen Bruss Senior Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, and at TUAG by Dina Deitsch, with generous support from the Wagner Foundation and Girlfriend Fund.
Ulises: Assembly is a residency and exhibition engaging the labor of bookworkers from the Philadelphia-based collective Ulises. Founded in 2016 and run by members Nerissa Cooney, Lauren Downing, Kayla Romberger, Gee Wesley, and Ricky Yanas, the bookshop and project space explores the relationships between publics and publications through projects, exhibitions, and residencies asking: “what do you do?” as a means of delving into the printed matters of art publishing today. The project renders visible labor, friendships, conviviality, and collectivity of bookworkers as a tribute to their chaotic communality. Ulises: Assembly is on view now at TUAG’s Grossman & Anderson Galleries at SMFA at Tufts campus at 230 Fenway, Boston through November 10, 2024.
In Ulises: Assembly the collective realizes a bookshop, a new archive, and workshops with a curated selection of collaborators including Nontsikelelo Mutiti, Lizania Cruz, and BB Workshop, Gerrit Rietveld Academie/Sandberg Instituut at the SMFA campus. The SMFA public billboard is contributed by Ken Lum, and featured graphics are designed by Kristian Henson.
Organized by curator Laurel V. McLaughlin, Ulises: Assembly is the first institutional residency and solo exhibition of the collective and is supported as part of the Dutch Culture USA program by the Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York.
