The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Cecilia M. McCormick, J.D. as the institution’s new president, following her successful interim presidency since January 2024. The decision by MICA’s Board of Trustees signifies a progressive step forward for the historic college of art and design.
Cecilia McCormick, previously the first female president of Elizabethtown College, has a notable record of fostering financial stability and growth. Her tenure at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia further underscores her commitment to integrating educational practices with community and workforce development.
“It has been a particular thrill to lead MICA these past several months. It is a truly vibrant place with remarkable faculty, staff, and students. I stand honored and ready to steward such a historic institution into its third century,” said McCormick.
Since stepping in as interim president, McCormick has actively worked towards MICA’s resurgence post-pandemic, introducing innovative strategies to bridge financial gaps and boost enrollment. Under her leadership, MICA will launch its new media arts program this fall and its first online Bachelor’s program in Design next year.
“Cecilia’s expertise and unwavering commitment have been evident from the start. Her vision and strategic approach are exactly what MICA needs at this transformative time,” commented Eric Jordahl, Chair of MICA’s Board of Trustees.
As MICA approaches its bicentennial year in 2026, McCormick’s presidency is set to usher in a new era. The College continues to be a Top Producer of Fulbright US Students and has adopted a strategic plan that emphasizes integrative education, combining innovation, entrepreneurship, and creative citizenship with contemporary art and design approaches.
