With a special anniversary collection celebrating 40 years of C Magazine
October 26–November 4, 2024, 9am
C Magazine’s annual contemporary art auction is on now until Monday, November 4! For the last 20 years, the auction has generated vital funding for the Toronto-based art and art criticism magazine, and for just as long, has been a source of anticipation for collectors and followers of contemporary art in Canada and beyond. Each year, the auction’s curated collection reflects the same commitment to idea-driven work that readers appreciate in C Magazine and cements its reputation for identifying promising practices ahead of the mainstream. In 2024, as C Magazine celebrates 40 years of publishing, the auction presents a special anniversary collection of 40 works chosen to highlight C’s legacy.
This year’s auction offers paintings, sculptures, video, photographs, drawings, and mixed media, all generously donated by artists who have relationships with the magazine. Featuring acclaimed artists including Robert Frank, Vera Frenkel, Carole Condé + Karl Beveridge, Barbara Astman, Shelley Niro, and John Scott, as well as some of the most promising names in Canada today, the collection demonstrates C Magazine’s essential role in the past, present, and future of Canadian contemporary art. In addition to the significance of the work it gathers, the collection’s estimated 130,000 USD value underscores just how crucial C Magazine and its programs are to donating artists and their galleries. Prospective buyers are encouraged to bid early; in celebration of C’s 40th and the central role artist projects have played in the magazine’s history, the first bidder on every artwork will receive one of 40 limited edition prints by artist Dan Starling! Register now at benefit.waddingtons.ca.
The auction is also notable as C’s first to include “experiences.” This year, seven experience lots offer bidders opportunities, ranging from practical to luxurious, to engage directly with artists, curators, and cultural workers through activities in Toronto, Vancouver, and New York. Learn more about these experiences, view the collection, and register to bid today. From now until the auction closes at 8pm ET on Monday, November 4, every bid you place is an investment in the future of critical and inclusive art publishing. Each year, hundreds of artists, writers, thinkers, students, educators, and arts workers look to C Magazine for critical recognition, editorial care, early-career support, to sharpen their ideas, conduct research, engage in a forum with their peers, and so much more.
Please note that registration through Waddington’s requires ID validation. This step may take time (up to 48 hours). Visit benefit.waddingtons.ca to register today to avoid missing out. Remember, bidding ends at 8pm ET on Monday, November 4, 2024. The highest bidder becomes the buyer when the auction closes. Read the full auction terms and conditions. C The Visual Arts Foundation is a registered charity. Any successful bids that exceed the estimated market value of artworks will receive a Canadian tax receipt for the portion of the sale above the estimated amount.
About C Magazine
Established in 1984, C Magazine is a contemporary art and criticism periodical that functions as a forum for significant ideas in art and its contexts. Each issue explores a theme that is singularly engaged with emerging and prevailing perspectives through original art writing, criticism, and artist projects. Our content focuses on contemporary art in Canada and the activities of Canadian practitioners living abroad—with an emphasis on those from equity-owed communities—as well as on international practices and dialogues. We are committed to facilitating meaningful, pluralistic, interdisciplinary, historically-engaged, and imaginative conversations about art.
