Ko’eyene—Festival Theaterformen brings together Indigenous perspectives in Braunschweig, Germany. Curated by Denilson Baniwa, Naine Terena, Gustavo Caboco Wapichana, Jamille Pinheiro Dias.

From June 13–23 the Festival Theaterformen will show international theatre, dance and performances in Braunschweig. This year Festival Theaterformen brings together the perspectives of Indigenous artists and collectives from diverse South American peoples and regions on the interconnectedness between nature and time.

A space for intercultural dialogue will be created in the heart of the theatre park, which will be designed by the artists themselves. Inspired by the idea of “Ko’eyene”, which means “today” in the Indigenous community of the Terena, there will be a space to think about time beyond chronology together. To do so the curators Denilson Baniwa, Naine Terena, Gustavo Caboco Wapichana and Jamille Pinheiro Dias are creating a diverse programme involving over fifteen artists, including Francy Baniwa, Francisco Baniwa, Lilly Baniwa, Roseane Cadete, Wihtner FaGo & Chana Davila, Idjahure Kadiwel, Ziel Karapotó, Eskina Qom & Ema Cuañeri, Kaiwino Wiz, Dhoze Terena Kali Sini, Irineu Nje’a Terena and Niara Terena. Denilson Baniwa and Gustavo Caboco Wapichana just co-curated the Hãhãwpuá Pavilion—as the Brazilian Pavilion is referred to in this edition of the 60th International Venice Biennale.

Along with installations, performances and different workshops that provide insights into the interdisciplinary artistic practices and practice knowledge together, there will be films and hip-hop concerts by Indigenous bands near the Haeckel Garden House in the festival centre, which will also be designed by Gustavo Caboco Wapichana. Around the idyllic garden house, places for coming together will be created where people can relax in hammocks or in a shady spot among the trees.

The festival will also show performances by Indigenous artists Tiziano Cruz and Pauliina Feodoroff:

In Soliloquio (I woke up and hit my head against the wall), Tiziano Cruz deals with the Argentinian state’s ongoing mechanisms of oppression that threaten Indigenous communities. June 14–15, Staatstheater Braunschweig.

The performance Matriarchy by Pauliina Feodoroff was created for the Sámi Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2022 and tells of power relations that have become unbalanced and the question of how sovereign forms of life can be restored in Sámi society based on the exploitation of natural resources. June 1920, Staatstheater Braunschweig.
