In 1974, Adelina von Fürstenberg founded the Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève, the first Kunsthalle in French-speaking Switzerland.
The institution can now proudly look back on half a century of championing local emerging artists and introducing the local public to such international figures as Marina Abramović, Joseph Beuys, Hannah Black, Martin Boyce,Lisetta Carmi, Maurizio Cattelan, Rochelle Feinstein, Chiara Fumai, Gilbert & George, Nan Goldin, Dan Graham, On Kawara, Pipilotti Rist, Ugo Rondinone, Cindy Sherman, Kiki Smith, Wu Tsang, Andy Warhol, Lawrence Weiner, and many more.
For five decades, the Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève has also stood out as a production platform, developing and supporting original artworks and exhibitions. This same idea drives its flagship, the Biennale de l’Image en Mouvement (BIM). Whether in the form of artistic residencies, production grants, and digital programs, or through its varied educational offerings, the Centre has continually cultivated fertile ground for innovation and artistic expression.
As the Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève proudly marks this milestone anniversary, engaging artists and the public remains its utmost priority. To celebrate, the Centre has invited designer Giacomo Castagnola to develop a site-specific installation that revisits its rich history. Over the course of the year, the installation will present—and donate to the public—a selection of publications, posters, and other printed material from the archive.
