The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen was founded in 1961 and has since evolved into one of the most important museums in Europe. It houses a unique collection of paintings from the historical avant-gardes of the twentieth century and key works of contemporary art. At its two venues in Düsseldorf, K20 and K21, the museum presents ambitious temporary and permanent exhibitions and conceives and organizes innovative educational formats on socially relevant topics. The Kunstsammlung NRW is a museum in transition, addressing the issues of diversity, digitalization, and sustainability in its program and as an institution, and actively reaching out to new visitor groups.
We are seeking the following person to join our team as of September 1, 2024:
Head of the Curatorial Department (m/f/d)
Responsibilities and duties
–Representation of the director and the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen both internally and externally
–Participation in the overall program planning and conceptual orientation with a special focus on internationality and diversity
–Conception of the scholarly curatorial program of K20 in cooperation with the director and the curators, including coordination of all processes associated with its implementation
–Conception and realization of exhibitions, other curatorial projects (e.g., symposia, lectures, performances), and publications
–Preparation of scholarly expert assessments, statements, and reports
–Cooperation with national and international museums and international networking
–Personnel responsibility and team management for the staff of the curatorial department and the library
–Regular exchange with the exhibition management, restoration, registrar, education, communication, and administration departments
–Budgetary responsibility and sponsor acquisition for the K20 programs, controlling of exhibition budgets
–Thematic and scholarly processing of funding applications
–Close and regular exchange with the stakeholders of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, such as the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia
–Collaboration on cross-departmental initiatives, for example on diversity, digitalization, and sustainability
Qualifications and skills
–Successful completion of a university degree in art history, art theory/criticism, or a comparable qualification
–Comprehensive, specialized knowledge in the field of international classical modernism, postwar modernism, and contemporary art
–Long-standing curatorial experience in responsible positions in national / international museums
–High level of leadership, organizational, and communication skills and above-average commitment
–Very good networking within the national and international art scene
–Very good language skills in at least German and English
