Shilpa Gupta: Untitled

Internationally acclaimed artist Shilpa Gupta’s artwork, Untitled, captivates audiences at the National Gallery Singapore’s Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden. This thought-provoking installation, part of the Gallery’s annual Commission Series, delves into the complexities of human existence, challenging viewers to contemplate themes of physicality, perception, and geopolitical struggles.

Untitled invites viewers to confront the contradictions inherent in human behavior through an intriguing display of intertwined bodies locked in combat atop a single head. As visitors approach the installation, they are confronted with a revelation, prompting reflection on the physical and emotional wounds endured by individuals.

Perched on an elevated platform resembling an arena, the artwork is surrounded by the bustling metropolis of Singapore, offering a visceral experience that merges art, architecture, and urban life. Gupta’s unconventional use of inflatable medium creates a stark contrast with the surroundings, enhancing the visual impact and encouraging interaction from visitors, particularly children who find themselves drawn to its engaging narratives.

Gupta’s vision for the installation extends beyond the physical space, aiming to challenge preconceived notions and initiate conversations across diverse audiences. The Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Commission series, known for its reflection of Southeast Asia’s cultural heritage, continues its tradition of showcasing leading international artists. Previous commissioned artists include Danh Vo, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Cao Fei. This series is made possible through the generous support of Far East Organization.

Untitled by Shilpa Gupta is currently on display at the Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Gallery, Level 5, City Hall Wing at National Gallery Singapore till March 31, 2024. Admission is free.
