For visual arts between France and the US
Deadline: March 20, 2024, 11:59pm
Etant donnés is a program from Villa Albertine and Albertine Foundation, with the exclusive sponsorship of AXA and in partnership with Institut français, ADAGP, and the Ministère de la Culture. Its primary goal is to foster, promote, and support artistic creations and performances through cultural institutions and artistic exchanges.
Etant donnés grants are designed in two complementary streams:
Creative Grants for projects up to 30,000 USD for American and French nonprofit institutions (museums, art centers, etc.) wishing to organize exhibitions or installations featuring living French or France-based artists and American artists, respectively. Priority is given to coproductions, new commissions, or all types of projects creating new connections or partnerships between institutions, living artists and curators from both sides. The call is open for projects taking place between September 1, 2024 and August 31, 2026.
Curatorial fellowships addressed to American curators, either independent or affiliated with institutions, who wish to travel to France to conduct research on the French visual art scene. In 2024, Villa Albertine partners for the second time with ICI (Independent Curators International) to offer up to three travel grants of 3,000 dollars each to US-based curators from within ICI’s network and beyond. The research trip must take place between June 2024 and August 2025.

For 30 years, Etant donnés has focused on introducing French and American visual artists whose works have rarely, if ever, been shown in the United States or in France. It aims also to strengthen ties between France and the United States in the field of contemporary art by fostering active collaboration and encouraging long-lasting partnerships between French and American visual artists, collectives, curators and cultural institutions. Since its inception, Etant donnés has developed an international reputation by allocating over 4 million dollars to fund more than 350 projects.
In 2023, Etant donnés has supported several major projects, such as Marguerite Humeau’s land art Orisons with Black Cube Nomadic Art Museum in Colorado, Julien Creuzet’s performance presented by Performa, New York, or Bianca Bondi solo show at Dallas Contemporary, Texas. The Curatorial fellowships have been awarded to Emily Edwards, Kate Kraczon, and Kari Rittenbach.
