Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein is delighted to announce its 2024 exhibition programme.
We wish to emphasise a curatorial mode of thinking that concentrates on the processual and the performative as a stance. This also applies to the dialogue with the collection, that always remains an essential consideration for us. —Letizia Ragaglia, Director, Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein
Artist’s Choice: Bethan Huws
March 1–September 1, 2024
Opening: February 29, 6pm
As part of the Artist’s Choice series, the artist Bethan Huws (b. 1961 in Bangor, Wales) was invited to curate a show based on the works of Marcel Duchamp at Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein. A mise-en-scène was developed which incorporates works by Josef Albers, Max Beckmann, Lucio Fontana, Alexej von Jawlensky, Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Piet Mondrian, Pablo Picasso and Thomas Struth–four of which will be physically absent but conceptually present. A series of four new videos by Bethan Huws has been specially produced for the exhibition: the first focuses on Fountain; the second on the Ready-made; the third on Guillaume Apollinaire; and the fourth, General, on Duchamp in general.
Barry Le Va: In a State of Flux
April 26–September 29, 2024
Opening: April 25, 6pm
Barry Le Va (1941–2021) is regarded as a moderniser of sculpture in post-1960s art. In his cross-disciplinary oeuvre, which is seen as beginning in the early days of process art and postminimalism, he succeeded in expanding the concept of sculpture by incorporating the principles of change and instability as constants in his art. All his life, the floor was the artist’s “ground” and field for experimentation. Drawing is an integral part of Le Va’s oeuvre. On the one hand, he saw it as a “plan view” and a kind of composition, while at the same time permitting interpretation and improvisation in situ. Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, which holds several key early works by Barry Le Va from the collection of Rolf Ricke, presents the first retrospective since the artist’s death, providing a survey of his work from the 1960s to his final groups of work.
A production of Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, curated by Christiane Meyer-Stoll. Further venues: Fruitmarket, Edinburgh and Museum Kurhaus Kleve.
In the Context of the Collection: Georgia Sagri, Between Wars. Case_O
September 20, 2024–February 9, 2025
Opening: September 19, 6pm
Georgia Sagri’s (b. 1979 in Athens) artwork is characterised by many years of performance practice. Sculpture, video and digital media, installation, text and drawing are important elements that evolve from this. At the same time, her commitment to social justice, emancipation and self-organisation are also reflected in her works. The starting point for Between Wars. Case_O is an invitation from Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein to juxtapose her work with works of art informel from the Monauni collection. The invitation arose from a piece by Georgia Sagri that was added to the Kunstmuseum’s collection in 2023: the monumental sculpture Dynamis | Soma in orgasm as sex (2017), 2023, that she created in duplicate for documenta 14 (2017).
Ana Lupas
November 1, 2024–March 9, 2025
Opening: October 31, 6pm
Ana Lupas (b. 1940 in Cluj-Napoca, Romania) has been an outstanding figure in Eastern European art since the 1960s. In 2024, Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam are dedicating what will be the most comprehensive solo show so far to Ana Lupas, featuring works from the 1960s to the present. The exhibition in Vaduz focuses on two as yet unpublished series of works. In an environment characterised by unfreedom and oppression in Romania, Ana Lupas created an oeuvre that is as impressive as it is radical. Her early, experimental work comprises textile works, sculptures, environments, installations and action art.
The exhibition is being developed by Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein in close collaboration with the artist and is a co-production with the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Curated by Letizia Ragaglia for Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein.
