On June 5, Americas Society will open the first solo institutional presentation of Argentine artist Alejandra Seeber in New York. Born in Buenos Aires in 1969, Seeber came of age in the Argentine arts scene of the mid-1990s, moving to New York in 1999 and participating in the painting revision movements of the early 2000s. Seeber draws inspiration from alternative rock, stage designs, musical performances, urban culture, digital software, textiles, and crafts, sources that she transforms into dynamic paintings.
Surveying the development of her work since the mid-1990s, the exhibition demonstrates how, over the years, Seeber has increasingly pressed the limits between representation and abstraction, creating paintings that emphasize the formal qualities of everyday objects such as furniture and plants. In her work, the repeated depiction of common domestic spaces, such as a living room, provides an opportunity for her to explore the history of Western visual culture and challenge the normative ways in which we perceive and understand our living environments.
To guide visitors through Seeber’s formal experiments, the show is accompanied by a site-specific installation in which the artist has created a minigolf course in Americas Society’s galleries. Made from rugs, the grass-colored course allows visitors to play in an artificial indoor landscape while viewing the paintings. Three larger rugs, featuring palette shapes and landscape designs created by the artist, further connect the natural world and the practice of painting. By inviting visitors to play alongside her works, Seeber proposes a circuit by which to view her last twenty-five years of work—a playful environment that creates a porous boundary between artwork and audience.
To accompany the show, we will present a series of public programs and publish a catalog.
