Our landscape architecture program is located in the Arctic city of Tromsø and a part of UiT the Arctic University of Norway. Our program specializes in Arctic and sub-Arctic landscapes where students develop knowledge, competencies and design skills to respond to environments that are experiencing accelerated change on a range of spatial scales. In 2023, our program, in cooperation with the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, was awarded the prestigious Ribas Piera International Landscape Architecture School Prize. Our work was highly commended in areas of teaching methodologies, design processes and engagement with urgent issues pertaining to arctic and subarctic environments.
The first Landscape Architecture students at UiT the Arctic University of Norway started in 2013 on a two-year international master education. This was a pilot program in joint venture with The Oslo School of Architecture, AHO. Since then, our courses have developed further to respond to a range of environmental issues concerning climate change, urban development, rural decline, and threats to indigenous lands. Teaching and learning comprise lectures, fieldwork/excursions, group work, individual project work, seminars, workshops, exhibitions etc. Project work with direct teacher-to-student and student-to-student dialogue makes up a significant part of the teaching. We put great emphasis on situated fieldwork. Due to the program’s specialism in arctic and sub-artic environments it is vital that students engage with diverse conditions in these regions, for example, weather conditions and extreme light/dark periods. The program’s primary objective is to educate proficient landscape architects who can operate within the frames of sustainable development.
We offer two landscape architecture education programmes. The first, is a five-year course that is carried out in collaboration with the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO). Students spend three years at the institute of Urbanism and Landscape in Oslo followed by two years at UiT’s landscape programme. We also offer a two-year international master’s in landscape architecture where students from both programmes study together. Students are supported by staff with academic, research and practitioner experience specific to Arctic environments.
