Situated in the arctic city of Tromsø, Tromso Academy of Arts at UiT offers a particular vantage point towards an increasingly significant geopolitical region; The Arctic—with its rich history of exploration, science, trade, culture, and cohabitation between indigenous and Norwegian populations. The Academy host the world’s northernmost fine arts school which in addition to Fine Art includes programmes in Landscape Architecture and Creative Writing. Tromso Academy of Arts maintains a high, international standard of education, which have helped to establish the academy as a unique hub for culture and knowledge exchange in the arctic region.
Programs
Tromso Academy of Arts offers a two-year master’s program (MFA) and a three-year bachelor’s program (BFA) The master’s programme in Fine Arts is a two-year English-instructed course, which aims to provide graduates with a unique point of departure into the art world as professional artists. The programme is aimed at emerging artists who seek to advance their practice discursively and independently. This practice-based, highly individualized programme starts from your own project, which will be realized and intensified during the two years of your studies in regular consultation with your assigned tutors.
Students accepted into the programme have access to individual workspaces, project rooms, various workshops and supervising to carry out academic and research components during their course. The programme includes study trips, individual and group exhibitions, and collaborations with other professional artistic institutions and venues in Tromsø, Norway and abroad. During the program, critical and analytical methods will be explored as well as the relationship to the surrounding environment and institutions both within the artistic domain and in society at large. Students are encouraged to develop their own initiatives within the programme, to provides a balanced insight into contemporary issues from arctic, local and international perspectives.
Exchange and international residencies
Tromso Academy of Arts is an active member of the KUNO network, an international exchange of the Nordic and Baltic Fine Arts academies and numerous international institutions of higher education in the arts within the Erasmus+ program.
