The Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation is a non-profit organisation based in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, dedicated to collecting, exhibiting and promoting contemporary photography. It is responsible for the development and presentation of the Art Collection Deutsche Börse, whose 25th anniversary it is celebrating this year. To mark this special occasion, the Foundation is presenting an extensive programme of shows in its exhibition space in Frankfurt/Eschborn and abroad.
With Chris Killip: A Retrospective, the Foundation will present the major body of work of the influential British photographer from February 22–May 19, 2024. Killip’s black and white images from the 1970s and 1980s convey a vivid image of the population in Northern Britain in times of economic and social upheaval. The intimate portraits, landscape and architectural shots illustrate the consequences and challenges of the economic changes people faced. The retrospective is the most comprehensive presentation of Killip’s oeuvre in Germany to date.
During the international photography fair Photo London, the Foundation will present the exhibition See/Change—Art Collection Deutsche Börse from May 16–19, 2024 at Somerset House. Curated by Anne-Marie Beckmann, Director of the Foundation, and Renée Mussai, London-based independent curator and scholar, it will showcase current artistic positions and recent acquisitions centred around the theme of human condition that critically reflect on poignant matters ranging from subjectivity and freedom, environmental and climate change to community activism and migration. Works by artists such as Mohamed Bourouissa, Daniel Jack Lyons, Sim Chi Yin and Vanessa Winship will spotlight the diversity of the continuously growing collection.
Once again, the Foundation is participating in the international triennial of photography RAY, which will take place from May to September 2024 in Frankfurt and the surrounding area. The Foundation will contribute to the triennial with the comprehensive group exhibition RAY ECHOES—Triennial of Photography that is specifically dedicated to the role of photography as a carrier of memory in its premises from May 30–September 22, 2024. On view are works by Jana Bissdorf, Sophie Calle, Maisie Cousins, Omar Victor Diop, Nicholas Nixon, Mimi Plumb and Johanna Schlegel that question how missing or blurred memories can be visualised or even recreated using the medium of photography.
The exhibition Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize 2024 will showcase the works of this year’s finalists VALIE EXPORT, Gauri Gill & Rajesh Vangad, Lebohang Kganye and Hrair Sarkissian at the Foundation’s exhibition space from June 15–September 22, 2024. Being one of the most prestigious international awards for contemporary photography, the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize is awarded annually in partnership with The Photographers’ Gallery London. The artists shortlisted in 2024 critically engage with urgent concerns and demonstrate photography’s unique capacity to reveal what is invisible, forgotten or marginalised and imagine a path to redress.
As part of the renowned photography festival “Les rencontres de la photographie d’Arles”, the Foundation will present a solo show by Mexican artist Diego Moreno from July 1–September 22, 2024 at the Manuel Rivera-Ortiz Foundation in Arles, France. In his work, Moreno reflects on subjects such as religion, identity and sexuality. His deeply personal work consists of graphic interventions on images coming from his family’s photographic archive.
From October 10, 2024–January 19, 2025, the Foundation will showcase new acquisitions for the Art Collection Deutsche Börse from the past two years in the group exhibition 25 Years of Art Collection Deutsche Börse, showing how these enrich the body of the collection and create a dialogue with previously acquired groups of works. The exhibition includes works from artists such as Sabiha Cimen, Marvel Harris, Helen Levitt, and Sabelo Mlangeni. It is curated by Anne-Marie Beckmann and British curator Mariama Attah, who has been advising the Foundation as Associate Curator on acquisitions for its collection since early 2023 as part of a two-year collaboration.
