The 18th Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art: Inner Sanctum on Kaurna Country offers an encounter with artists and poets interested in the human condition. Curated by José Da Silva, it unfolds across exhibitions, performances and talks that explore our engagement with the world and each other. Here, the idea of an inner sanctum illustrates the private or sacred spaces we create and the faculty of imagination that allows us to see culture and society differently. Within the exhibition, this takes place in homes and gardens, and in memories and stories of family and ancestors. It is also seen in locations of special knowledge, sacred activities, cultural environments, and, importantly, in the working spaces of artists and the art museum itself.
Featuring new commissions and recent works by Clara Adolphs (New South Wales), James Barth (Queensland), Christopher Bassi (Queensland), Seth Birchall (New South Wales), Kaye Brown (Northern Territory), Jacobus Capone (Western Australia), George Cooley (South Australia), Ali Cobby Eckermann (South Australia), Lawrence English (Queensland), Ruha Fifita (Queensland), Teelah George (Victoria), Paul Knight (Geraldton), Kate Llewellyn x Adelaide Chamber Singers (South Australia), Jessica Loughlin (South Australia), Peter Maloney (Australian Capital Territory), Jazz Money (New South Wales), Lillian O’Neil (Victoria), Nik Pantazopoulos (Victoria), Khaled Sabsabi (New South Wales), Marikit Santiago (New South Wales), Vivienne Shark Lewitt (Victoria), Tina Stefanou (Victoria), Heather B. Swann (Tasmania), Jasmine Togo-Brisby (Queensland).
The Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art remains the pre-eminent and longest-standing survey of contemporary Australian art. As a vital component of the Adelaide Festival since 1990, the 2024 Adelaide Biennial builds on its reputation and commitment to supporting and celebrating innovative and ambitious practices. The exhibition will be presented at the Art Gallery of South Australia from March 1 to June 2, 2024.
