“I want Mute to speak to our inner voices. It should bring the eyes closer to the ears; our bodies to the ground and our minds to the sky […] It will crack open thousands of miles below our feet, and the current will hold us.” —Pan Daijing
Haus der Kunst presents the largest solo exhibition to date by artist and composer Pan Daijing (b. 1991, Guiyang, China). Daijing’s live exhibition is an invitation to encounter the self within the other or vice versa. It activates the public as well as the iconic architecture of Haus der Kunst. Brought to life in a world of increasing entanglement, Daijing’s performance installations probe different modes of being in the world. Carried by immersive sonic landscapes that transcend conventional musical structures, her work metamorphoses into multiple formats and media, including music, performance, film, video, and architectural intervention. It creates a world that is governed by the grammar of feelings and senses, unlikely partnerships, and by the fearlessness to live. Mute will occupy the entire Westgalerie of Haus der Kunst and adjacent spaces inside and outside the building. It is dedicated to process and invites the audience on a journey: works from the past ten years are reinterpreted and supplemented by new commissions.
In conjunction with the exhibition, Pan Daijing’s first monograph will be published by Spector Books and in collaboration between Haus der Kunst München and Tai Kwun Contemporary. Contributors include Emma Enderby, Donatien Grau, Mark Harwood, Andrea Lissoni, Raimundas Malašauskas, Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese, Xue Tan, and Sarah Johanna Theurer. The book can be ordered here.
Mute amplifies Haus der Kunst’s mission to interconnect and bridge transdisciplinary approaches to art, with a focus on liveness and sound as fundamental practices of the present. TUNE, Haus der Kunst’s series of monthly sound and music residencies, as well as the recurring live-exhibition ECHOES are fundamental instruments of transforming the institution.
“We aim to give shape to an institution where everyone coming can understand themselves as a living community. We look forward to welcoming you at Haus der Kunst for this journey.“ —Andrea Lissoni, Artistic Director, Haus der Kunst
Mute is curated by Sarah Johanna Theuer with Lydia Antoniou, Emma Enderby, and Andrea Lissoni.
Mute is commissioned by Haus der Kunst München. With support from Y.D.C. and JNBY. With additional support for the performance by Kulturreferat der Landeshauptstadt München, Goethe-Institut; and Kemmler Foundation, an initiative of Kemmler Kemmler GmbH.
