Phileas – The Austrian Office for Contemporary Art supports artists, curators, galleries and institutions in Austria and works to strengthen their presence on the international landscape of contemporary art. Through long-term partnerships with museums, biennials and art institutions around the world, we enable the production and exhibition of new artworks and their donation to public collections.
As we celebrate our ten-year anniversary in 2024, Phileas is supporting and co-producing the following projects:
60th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, for the Austrian Pavilion by Anna Jermolaewa
60th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, for the participation of three artists in the main exhibition (to be announced)

In 2024, Phileas will be the commissioner of the Austrian Pavilion at the 15th Gwangju Biennale, South Korea. Artist Liesl Raff was selected through an open call to create an exhibition for the pavilion, which marks the first official participation of Austria at the Gwangju Biennale. The pavilion will be hosted by the LEEKANGHA Art Museum.
Phileas produces an annual series of publications titled First Monographs, which provide the first comprehensive overview of the work of an Austrian or Austria-based artist and introduce them to an international audience. Our next monograph in 2024 will present the work of the sculptor Birke Gorm.
In 2024, Phileas is launching a new, long-term initiative to support and promote writing about art. It will begin in the spring with a three-day workshop in Vienna in collaboration with Frieze New Writers, during which a group of aspiring writers will have the opportunity to develop their art-writing skills with support from editors and critics from frieze magazine. Applications are open until midnight (BST) on Friday 16 February, 2024.
Our exhibition space in Vienna presents projects that Phileas has recently co-produced with biennials and institutions around the world. The three projects that will be shown in 2024 are:
Belinda Kazeem-Kamiński: Respire (Liverpool)
January 31–April 20, 2024
