Collective is delighted to announce a solo show featuring a substantial new body of work by renowned Scottish artist Moyna Flannigan.
Flannigan first came to critical attention for her paintings, in particular, a series of fictional portraits of women. Since then, she has continued to make works across a range of media which challenge stereotypical representations of women throughout history—seeking to reflect “the full complexity of women’s lives”.
Since around 2016 she has pursued an investigation into the materials and methods of collage, incorporating a rich and eclectic range of visual and cultural references, from female archetypes in classical mythology, to poetry, histories of cinema and icons of pop culture.
Created in response to the unique context and architecture of our City Dome gallery, the exhibition will include figurative collages, a large scale frieze combining painting and collage entitled Looking for Pluto, alongside Space Shuffle, a constellation of paper sculptures that extend the principles of collage into three dimensional form and space.
On the occasion of the exhibition we will publish a catalogue with documentation of the new work at Collective. Featuring an essay by art historian Dr Pia Gottschaller, and an edited conversation between the artist and Sorcha Carey, Collective’s Director, the catalogue will be launched in August during the Edinburgh Art Festival.
Flannigan first exhibited with Collective in 1998, and as we celebrate our 40th year, we are delighted to welcome her back, and to work with her to support the development and presentation of another new departure in her practice.
