The School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago invites applications and nominations for two faculty positions to start in August 2024: Assistant Professor of Architecture in Design and Technology (tenure-track), and Clinical Professor of Architecture in Design and Technology (open rank).
Location: Chicago, Illinois
Deadline: January 8, 2024 at 11:59pm Central Time
Starting date: August 2024
Situated within the College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts (CADA), UIC’s School of Architecture shares complementary research agendas with the other three internationally recognized schools in the college, particularly the School of Design, with which it shares facilities and labs. The School of Architecture offers five degree programs: pre-professional (a four-year Bachelor of Science in Architecture, providing students with the basis for advanced standing in a graduate professional program); professional (a three-year NAAB accredited Master of Architecture); post-professional (a one-year Master of Science in Architecture), and two academic degree programs (a Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies, and a two-year Master of Arts in Design Criticism).
Located in one of the nation’s most ethnically diverse public urban research universities, the School of Architecture promotes architecture as a cultural practice. This implies that architecture is not only a defined field with intrinsic rules and specificities, but also one immersed in a network of manifestations, actions, philosophies, and conjunctural representations of who and how we are in the world today. Additional information about the School of Architecture can be found here.
Assistant Professor of Architecture in Design and Technology (full-time, tenure-track)
The selected candidate must demonstrate potential for investigating technology through creative architectural practice or scholarship into how design, science, and culture overlap. This includes how investigations into building materials and life cycles, environment and energy systems, ecology or climate agency contribute to disciplinary frameworks. The successful applicant will develop and teach elective courses in their area of expertise, and contribute to the core technology curriculum (seminars, lecture courses, and design studios) in both the undergraduate and graduate programs. Minimum qualifications: Applicants should have at least two years of teaching experience and a promising record of creative scholarship or practice with external recognition. They must hold a terminal degree (Master of Architecture) or an equivalent graduate professional degree, or a doctorate in architecture or related fields.
The application form can be found here.
Clinical Professor of Architecture in Design and Technology (full-time, open rank)
The selected candidate must demonstrate potential for embracing technology as a creative project, and will contribute technical ingenuity and speculative openness to complement the design and conceptual orientation of the school and its faculty. Candidates must situate their work within contemporary design practice and bring expertise and experience in environmental systems and/or building/material performance. The successful applicant will develop and teach foundational courses in their area of expertise, and contribute to the core technology curriculum (seminars, lecture courses, and design studios) in both the undergraduate and graduate programs. Applicants should have, at a minimum, two years teaching experience and a Master of Architecture or equivalent graduate professional degree. Professional licensure is preferred, but not required.
The application form can be found here.
To apply for these positions, please submit a letter of interest including a statement of practice and pedagogical goals, a curriculum vitae, three professional references with complete contact information, and a portfolio documenting professional practice work and teaching samples.
For full consideration, applications must be received by January 8, 2024 at 11:59pm Central Time.
