EastEast platform is excited to announce its much-anticipated relaunch. The new issue on architecture is now unfolding online, with the print version to be out in January 2024. Through interviews and features with expert architects and craftspeople, EastEast examines the material and immaterial positions of architecture at the intersection of history, community, and identity.
EastEast is a digital and print publication on culture, art, philosophy, and everyday life. Our aim is to readjust global cultural production and offer a multiplicity of vantage points and perspectives from West Asia, North Africa, Eastern Europe, the North and South Caucasus, Central Asia, East and Southeast Asia, and beyond. Our content is published in English and Russian, ensuring accessibility to readers in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Moreover, we are happy to announce that an Arabic version of our platform is set to launch in the upcoming spring of 2024.
EastEast brings together an international team of writers, artists, and media professionals under the guidance of Editor-in-Chief Furqat Palvan-Zade, a Tashkent-born and US-based researcher, publisher, and filmmaker.
The publication is supported by Caravane Earth, a foundation that promotes social, cultural, and ecological transformation. Its past and current projects include The Majlis at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2021, the Atlas Weavers initiative in Morocco, Heenat Salma Farm in Qatar, and the upcoming International Convention on Traditional Architecture and Urbanism.
Since its launch in 2020, EastEast has featured an array of prominent contributors, including academics Arjun Appadurai, Madina Tlostanova, Yuk Hui, and Walter Mignolo; artists Morehshin Allahyari, Foundland Collective, Tamiko Thiel, and Metahaven; and musicians Sarah Davachi, Rabih Beaini, and Hisham Mayet of Sublime Frequencies, among many others.
To mark its new chapter, EastEast announces “Interiors”: an open call for video artists and filmmakers from or working with EastEast’s core geographies.
We invite submissions of existing cinematic stories—under 60 minutes and of any genre—exploring architectural interiors from communal, personal, philosophical, material, and other perspectives. Selected films will be screened on EastEast website and the winner will receive a prize of 500 USD.
To submit your film, kindly provide a link to your work along with a brief description of both the film and your background. Send your submissions with the email subject “Interiors Open Call” to film [at] easteast.world before December 10, 2023.
