November 18, 2023–May 1, 2024
Helmut Newton—Fact & Fiction is the major exhibition organised by the Marta Ortega Pérez (MOP) Foundation celebrating the life and work of the acclaimed German-Australian photographer. This is the third exhibition presented by the MOP Foundation after those devoted to Peter Lindbergh and Steven Meisel and is displayed in its waterfront exhibition space at Muelle de Batería (A Coruña, Spain) until May 1, 2024.
The selection of photographs in the exhibition epitomises Newton’s bold, empowering and unapologetic visual language, including his iconic Big Nudes and memorable portraits of a range of exceptional personalities such as Andy Warhol, David Bowie, Margaret Thatcher, Charlotte Rampling, Elsa Peretti, Daryl Hannah, Jerry Hall, Naomi Campbell, Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld. As a counterpoint to his more iconic images, the exhibition also include examples of Newton’s lesser-known “landscapes”: highly atmospheric images of the places that influenced his work such as Paris, Los Angeles, Monte Carlo, Berlin, Vienna and Las Vegas, and which also reflect the very special atmosphere of the exhibition’s location in A Coruña.
The exhibition, presented in collaboration with the Helmut Newton Foundation and curated by Philippe Garner, Matthias Harder and Tim Jefferies, also tells the story of the man behind the camera through a series of videos showing Newton at work and in conversation; personal images providing insights into his childhood, his career and his relationship with his wife June; and further documents, posters, cameras and equipment, props, artefacts and memorabilia.
MOP Foundation
The Marta Ortega Pérez (MOP) Foundation is defined by three guiding passions: fashion, photography and A Coruña. Admission to the exhibitions organised by the MOP Foundation is free and profits from the sale of merchandise will be donated to the Future Stories project. The first edition of this project consisted of a collaboration with the Faculty of Fine Arts of Pontevedra and the MARCO Museum in Vigo. The beneficiaries of the second edition of the programme were Art and Design in Photography students from Galicia, who have just completed an artistic residency at the headquarters of the prestigious Fondazione Sozzani in Milan. The MOP Foundation also offers an artist-led educational programme that revolves around their exhibitions.
