ACC Residency Exhibition 2023: Planetary Pulse.
Artists: George Hiraoka Cloke, Jeong Ahram, Jueng Hye Jin, Kim Joon, Lee Hyun Min, Matt Gingold, Su Jin Bae and Jonathan Lemke, Yeom Inhwa.
Asia Culture Center (ACC) is pleased to announce its annual Residency Exhibition titled Planetary Pulse. This year’s exhibition takes place from November 10–30 at ACC Creation ACT Studio 2, where it will be presented in an open studio setting, shifting from the customary exhibition format. Eight artists/teams, selected from 340 applicants from 46 countries, will share their experiences and works produced in Gwangju inspired and developed through various exchanges, workshops, research, and experimentation.
The exhibition’s title, Planetary Pulse, embodies different ideas and practices presented by eight distinctive projects that explore alternative perspectives of our futures. These projects underscore the profound value of our planet and the importance of solidarity in an uncertain future. In the exhibition, the concepts of “sound” and “listening” emerge as artistic mediums that reaffirm our capacity to connect with each other through listening.
The artists drew inspiration from their surroundings in Gwangju and the city’s unique context. Among them, Kim Joon studied the urban ecosystem and nature of Gwangju, Jeolla Province, while Jueng Hye Jin researched Koryoin village (a settlement of ethnic Koreans from Central Asia and post-Soviet states). Yeom Inhwa explored medical and cosmetic care facilities in the old downtown, while George Hiraoka Cloke developed a conceptual approach to the Gwangju Human Rights Charter.
In conjunction with the ACC Sound Lab’s ongoing long-term project, Futures of Listening, this year’s program focuses on exploring sound art and the soundscape as a distinct genre, while also paying close attention to postcolonial analysis of the notion of listening. A series of four workshops led by leading sound art professionals were held between May and July to provide insight into the technical and artistic dimensions associated with soundscapes, as well as to explore the territories in sound art further.
In addition to the exhibition, a series of public programs will be held including workshops, performances and talks to offer a unique opportunity for audiences to discover and engage with diversified artistic practices and fresh perspectives on the displayed artworks.

ACC Residency
The Asia Culture Center (ACC) launched its international residency program in 2015 as part of its commitment to promoting creative projects and productions. Each year, the program selects themes relevant to contemporary issues and invites a group of creators and researchers from diverse backgrounds to engage in interdisciplinary exchange of ideas. During the residency, the participants challenge themselves to enrich their artistic practice through in-depth research and experimentation, with support from studio facilities and guidance provided by in-house specialists.
