SPARK Art Fair Vienna advocates for a new art fair concept, addressing the challenges of the art market. Based on a strong trust in art and the role of the galleries in the primary art market, SPARK Art Fair Vienna is the only international art fair focusing exclusively on solo presentations.

Its unique exhibition architecture is inspired by the steel construction of the historic MARX HALLE. A democratisation model allows all gallery stands to have the same size and architectural orientation. The vastness of the exhibition space and the booths’ open structure paves the way for a deeper and more personal encounter with each individual artistic position, lending SPARK an institutional flair.

Artists in focus
Through this exclusivity, the artists receive full attention for their work, the galleries are perceived more strongly in their role as developers and presenters, enabling established collectors and art enthusiasts to engage on a deeper level with contemporary artists and possibly make surprising (re)discoveries.

Curated fair
As consequent development in the concept of SPARK Art Fair Vienna, the gallery selection, especially the selection of the presented artist positions is mastered by a curatorial and advisory board, consisting of experienced curators and advisors with their specific expertise.

City in dialogue
The curatorial concept of SPARK Art Fair Vienna 2024 revolves around the notion of the city and the necessity of heterogenous and hybrid forms of cohabitation. With its same-size, open booths, and a floorplan that adheres to the structures of a democratic city, SPARK allows for different generations of artists to be presented in dialogue within a non-hierarchical setting, while being arranged according to conceptual affinities.

The demographic development of Vienna with its circular district arrangements has entailed an artistic hub with its concentric circles reaching out to the whole of Europe and beyond. Considered one of the most livable cities in the world, Vienna has attracted several international artists and art professionals who have settled in the city over the past decades. SPARK 2024 focuses on this amalgam of artistic representation by the international focus of domestic galleries on the one hand and artists and galleries attracted internationally on the other in order to engage in an active dialogue. Some artists will be taking the opportunity to set a statement with new works exclusively produced for the fair.

Besides the unique model of solo presentations, SPARK EXPANDED takes advantage of the open space of the fair by extending beyond the booths for the presentation of sculptures and installations. An additional venue adjacent to the fair’s grounds and located inside the MARX HALLE complex is the theater which hosts a cinema-size screen, where a curated film program of works by selected gallery artists will be shown during the fair. Added to this novelty at SPARK, there will be discursive and performative events, which take into consideration the wide range of artistic representation Vienna has to offer, from within the gallery system and beyond.

To support artists and galleries represented in the fair, SPARK will award prizes and arrange promotions for outstanding positions and presentations, exhibitors, and artists in collaboration with its partners.
