Become a Buell Postdoctoral Fellow
The Buell Center at Columbia University GSAPP seeks a recent doctoral recipient to join its intellectual community for a 21-month fellowship as a “Buell Center Research and Teaching Fellow” starting September 2024. Ideal candidates will be scholars of the built environment who are beginning an academic career of research and teaching, with a growing record of original writing intended for peer-reviewed publication. More information on the fellowship, which is co-hosted by the Society of Fellows and Heyman Center for the Humanities, is available at the Buell site. Online applications are still accepted at Interfolio.
More land conversations
This year, the Buell Center continues and concludes its series of “Conversations on Architecture and Land in and out of the Americas,” which began in winter 2021. This fall, speakers turn our attention to architecture’s role in the political economy of land. In celebration of the Buell’s participation in the Chicago Architecture Biennial, some events will take place in Chicago, in collaboration with the Biennial and the University of Chicago.

Attend a launch and anniversary event
On October 27, the Buell celebrates “Unsettling Land,” a day marking three interrelated capstone events: the publication of its booklet, Architecture and Land in and out of the Americas; the opening of 100 Links, an installation it produced with the architects AD-WO at the Chicago Architecture Biennial; and the 40th Anniversary of the foundation of the Buell Center. The event will include several presentations on the long history of settlement, its tools, its struggles, and its solidarities. Speakers include Jo Guldi (Emory University, author of The Long Land War), Timothy Hyde (MIT), Manu Kanuka (Barnard), The Floating Museum, and AD-WO. The evening will conclude with a celebratory toast and reception. Copies of the booklet will be available.
October 27, 3pm EST. 114 Avery Hall, Columbia GSAPP. Please RSVP to attend in person or online.
