The Department of Art, Film and Visual Studies (AFVS) at Harvard University seeks to appoint a tenure-track or tenured professor in the History and Theory of Film and/or Media Studies. Of particular interest are research areas that may include but are not limited to media archaeology, visual culture theory, video art, contemporary cinemas, digital media studies, and critical readings of race and ethnicity in moving images. Scholars who identify as people of color or historically under-represented minorities are especially encouraged to apply.

The appointment is expected to begin July 1, 2024, and the tenure-track or tenured professor will be responsible for teaching undergraduates as well as graduate students in the PhD Program in Film and Visual Studies (FVS), in AFVS, as well as participating in Harvard’s lively ecology of moving image research, production, and exhibition in the Film Study Center, Critical Media Practice (a secondary field for Harvard graduate students), the Harvard Film Archive and the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts. A PhD and teaching experience at the college or university level are required; a track record of curatorial and/or critical work is preferred but not required.

External applicants and finalists considered for a tenured appointment will need to complete the same procedures as external applicants and finalists in a search designated specifically for a tenured appointment.

Candidates should have a record of accomplishment in the field as demonstrated by publications, and participation in international scholarly debate. A PhD and experience teaching at the college or university level are required. An auxiliary critical or curatorial practice in film and/or media is preferred but not required.

Special instructions
Candidates are encouraged to apply by November 1, 2023; applications will be reviewed until the position is filled. Please submit the following materials through the ARIeS portal:
–Cover letter

Three letters of recommendation are required, and the application is considered complete only when at least three letters have been received. For candidates for a tenure-track position, at least one letter must come from someone who has not served as the candidate’s undergraduate, graduate, or postdoctoral advisor.

External applicants to a tenured position are required to complete, sign, and upload/submit the form entitled “Authorization to release information for external applicants” as part of the Conduct Inquiry Process and Procedures for External Applicants and Finalists to Tenured Positions.
